Three degrees are offered: Associate, Teaching License, and Master Artist. Each degree requires completion of two certificates, Level I and Level II.

Students will learn to play standard traditional and contemporary Japanese instrumental works as well as several modern works with Western tuning. Within each level, students will learn to play five pieces of music. Courses may also include texts or other material regarding koto composers, musical works, tunings, koto history as well as some Japanese and Western music theory.

Following completion of the requirements for each level, students are evaluated and upon passing are awarded their certificate and/or degree.
